Too early for braces?

Once a child's permanent teeth begin to come in, they should be examined. Because every child is different, the best starting time for orthodontic treatment depends on individual needs. If your child requires treatment, early intervention can make a significant difference.

During an initial examination, we will evaluate the following:

• Facial growth
• Spacing between teeth
• Crowding
• Extra or missing teeth
• Habits like tongue thrusting and thumb sucking

What usually happens during an initial orthodontic exam?

In order to determine your specific needs, we will completely evaluate your mouth. A comprehensive evaluation typically includes:

• Taking impressions of your teeth, from which models are made
• Photographing your teeth, face, and smile
• Taking X-rays of your head and teeth
• Determining your medical and dental health history

With these steps completed, we then carefully evaluate your specific needs, and provide you with a treatment plan.

What are spacers/separators?

Because teeth normally fit tightly against one another, spacers are inserted before placement of braces to make space for attaching the bands. They are small plastic segments. In a matter of days, spacers gently move the desired teeth slightly apart.
